NBAA Honors Veteran Journalists Horne, Wynbrandt at NBAA-BACE

The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) honored Tom Horne, editor of the Turbine Edition of AOPA Pilot magazine, with the David W. Ewald Platinum Wing Award for his lifetime achievement in journalism. The association also bestowed the Gold Wing Award for Journalism Excellence upon James Wynbrandt for his article on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The journalists received the awards during the association’s Media Kick-Off Breakfast, held immediately prior to the opening of the 2019 NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE), which runs through Oct. 24 in Las Vegas, NV.

The Platinum Wing Award – which is not presented annually, but instead marks the contributions over a career in journalism that have made this industry a community – is named for the late David Ewald, who helped create Business & Commercial Aviation magazine and co-founded Flight Training magazine. Previous recipients include David Collogan, Bill Garvey and Paul Lowe.

As the editor of AOPA Pilot’s Turbine Edition, Horne has championed safety in business aviation – including for single-pilot turbine flying – developing articles based on the latest studies and expert analysis, noted NBAA Chair Lloyd “Fig” Newton in presenting the award.

Wybrandt was honored with NBAA’s 2019 Gold Wing award for an in-depth article about sustainable aviation fuel and efforts industrywide to promote the use of these new “green” fuels.

His article, published in Business Jet Traveler, not only explains the science and economics of SAF in plain English; it also makes clear that SAF is a drop-in fuel – available today – and it is safe and approved for every engine that runs on Jet-A. This author did extensive research and made clear that SAF is truly sustainable, reducing overall carbon lifecycle emissions by 50-80%.
