Waiting For FAA ApprovalFrederick Gevalt At the Pointy End of the SpearFrederick Gevalt Or How a Charter Audit Can Be Similar to Endoscopy or Worse Tuesday, October 17th, was a typical morning in Boca Raton, Florida. At 9:30, inside his airport office with a client, Universal Jet’s CEO, Michael McCauley was ensconced in the meeting, the air conditioning insulating him from the hot humid air on the other side of the window, when the FAA walked in to his conference room and spoiled the climate almost instantly. Introducing themselves as “Keith and Patricia,” (business cards were not passed out, nor has there as of this writing been any debriefing or after action report with details like the last names of the inspectors) the pair of FAA inspectors produced identification, and before Universal Jet’s client announced themselves as representatives of “Operation Charter Quest,” the recently formed national audit team for checking compliance with Opspec A008 and operational control. This particular meeting got off to a rocky start, when McCauley had to disclose that his Director of Operations and his Chief Pilot were both on trips. Perhaps expecting career bureaucrats like themselves, parked at desks down the hall, the FAA greeted this news with a certain amount of shock until McCauley pointed out that his Assistant Director of Operations, Josh Fenton could join them in fifteen minutes to lead them through their inspection of his company. ...In A Hurry?
