The European Parliament is calling for an evaluation of the ban on airline passengers carrying liquids in hand luggage, saying it should be abolished.

In a motion passed September 5, with 464 votes in favor, 158 against and 70 abstentions, the motion to review the hand luggage liquid restriction was passed.

Like airline passengers in the United States, airline travelers in the European Union must pack their carry on liquids in small, transparent plastic bags. Water or other beverages may be purchased after the bags are carefully scrutinized by security.
Regulations on liquids in

 hand luggage came into play last year, after several people in Great Britain were arrested in an alleged plot to use liquid explosives to target trans-Atlantic flights.

The European Parliament argued that the regulations were costly to execute, both to airports and passengers. In addition, Parliament reasoned that enforcement efforts have not been consistent, nor have they been proven effective.
