Concerned about the effects of carbon dioxide on the environment? Starflight Aviation, an air charter broker with offices in the United Kingdom and the US, has embarked upon a program to balance the projected annual carbon dioxide emissions from their clients’ flights by supporting a combination of new woodland creation and education projects.

The projected annual emissions from Starflight Aviation's clients’ flights are independently estimated at 7,000 tons of carbon dioxide and whilst they are not the direct emissions of the company, it has taken the lead on addressing these emissions and engaging with its clients to promote carbon responsibility.

The Starflight Aviation Forest project has involved the creation of new woodland at Broadstone Holt in the National Forest in Derbyshire, using 14,950 trees to create 7 hectares of new woodland on an 8.7 hectare site. The site was approved by the Forestry Commission in March 2007 and was planted by ISO14001 certified foresters, whose operations are subject to external audit. The trees used are predominantly of a native species including a majority of oak and beech. Local schoolchildren were involved in the actual planting, and it is envisaged that it will be used as an external classroom resource in future years.

The education project educates primary school children about renewable energy values. The purpose is to help create lower carbon consumption habits in one of the world’s highest per capita emitting countries. The schools are located in the South West of England with the first 15 schools already commencing programs in Summer 2007.
