2010 SMS Audit Results Report Released

PRISM has released its annual Safety Management System (SMS) Audit Results report.
For the past 10 years, ARGUS PROS has performed a significant number of audits on private and commercial business aircraft flight operations. The PRISM team reviews and compiles the results from these audits into one single report. The 2010 SMS Audit Results report focuses on areas of SMS and emergency response planning that were found by auditors to have the highest number of deficiencies.
“PRISM is pleased to provide business aviation operators with the valuable information we have extracted from the ARGUS PROS audit program,” PRISM executive vice president Bill Yantiss said. “By highlighting the common problem areas found in SMS implementation and execution, we believe that PRISM can help operators review and improve their own safety efforts.”
The report is based on the findings of a total of 65 audits completed during the period from Jan. 1, 2010, to December 2010. The report examines both SMS and emergency response planning. It identifies the areas that flight departments are most challenged by and provides recommendations regarding industry best practices.
“The detailed report provides operators with benchmarking- type data that affords them the opportunity to evaluate their own safety programs against some of the most professional companies in the industry,” PRISM director of system safety Steve Witowski said. “After reviewing the report, we found a vast majority of the audit findings pointed to a lack of SMS training. Employees need to be active participants and have a good understanding of safety management concepts in order for an SMS to be effective.”
